The 2020 OEDA (On Entry Diagnostic Assessment), is a free assessment that has been specifically created to address the challenges of children starting YN, YR and Y1 in September 2020 following the Covid-19 Lockdown. It is not intended to replace existing ongoing assessment systems but provide a unique, specific and responsive assessment to identify individual needs on entry. Using simple criteria based on the professional judgement of the teachers, it will entail a judgement of whether the child is ‘secure’ or ‘requires additional support’ in each aspect. This will provide an overall picture of the child, and the cohort, in terms of their:
- Emotional and Psychological Wellbeing
- Social Development
- Independence and Autonomy
- Self-Care and Hygiene
- Physical Development
- Language and Communication
It is envisaged that this process will be an immediate one, taking place within the first 2 – 3 weeks of entry to school. In the spirit of ‘pure’ assessment, it will also provide links and signposts to resources and activities that can address issues identified during the assessment, so that children can be fully and effectively supported in order to (re)secure the foundations for effective learning and development. As soon as 2020 OEDA has been completed, the school’s approach to assessment of all aspects of the EYFS will then take place.
