Smart surveillance is now a cost-efficient, reliable and effective way to safeguard education facilities, says Trevor Wallace, MD of Metro Security (GB) PLC. CCTV cameras, working either standalone or integrated with other security and building management systems, are a proven method for monitoring the safety of pupils, teaching staff and others at schools, colleges, academies and university campuses, he points out.
To help fulfill duty of care obligations, Metro’s engineers can specify and configure custom-designed, scalable and future-proof surveillance solutions, ranging from basic CCTV systems through to fully integrated installations supporting automatic number plate recognition – to check on those entering school grounds by vehicle, for example.
Multi-role systems
Head teachers, education managers and others responsible for facilities can use surveillance measures for deterrence and reassurance purposes, as well as proactive site monitoring and any post-event investigation/evidential purposes.
The latest megapixel and high definition IP cameras offer an exciting combination of detailed images and the ability to position and connect equipment over long cable lengths without needing an electrician. This significantly reduces costs, while also allowing IP-addressable cameras to be redeployed around a site quickly, easily and inexpensively to suit changing requirements, site configuration changes and evolving security threats.
‘Backwards’ compatibility
IP-enabled CCTV systems can also incorporate older, analogue cameras and other digital units, meaning equipment that remains operationally effective can continue playing its role.
CCTV surveillance systems additionally offer opportunities to integrate with other systems operating on site, such as fire detection and access control equipment, allowing the cameras to become visual verification devices to confirm movement or an incident if automatically prompted by eg the access control system’s activation during out-of-hours periods.
